Whether they call it bipolar disorder or use the original term of manic depression, those who suffer from these symptoms experience extreme emotions with periods of major depression on the one side and mania on the other which leads to one of the three stages of bipolar disorder.
The extreme emotions experienced by people with bipolar disorder is uncontrollable and, in most cases, unforeseeable. According to the American Psychiatric Association, mania is defined as a “distinct period during which there is n abnormal and persistently elevated, expansive, or irritable mood.” When in a manic episode, people feel invincible, have lots of energy, and an inflated sense of self-worth. When in a depressed state, they often feel as though they can’t do anything right, like their world is falling apart around them and they are often suicidal.
Nearly 30 percent of everyone who is diagnosed with bipolar disorder have co-morbid OCD. When this is the case, the onset of OCD is usually at a much younger age than normal. Masi et al (2004) found in their research that when someone suffers from both OCD and bipolar disorders, their obsessions are more “existential, philosophical, and/or superstitions.”
