Gingivitis is the first stage of gum disease that affects the tissue surrounding the teeth. Three out of every four adults experience some level of gingivitis over the course of a lifetime. However, gingivitis is usually painless in mild forms, so most individuals do not know when the problem occurs. This may result in a lack of treatment for many people. If gingivitis is left untreated, the problem may progress to the second stage of gum disease called periodontitis. Periodontitis destroys the tissue surrounding teeth and causes damage to the bone that supports teeth.

The Symptoms of Gum Disease

Mild cases of gingivitis may be hard to spot. Gums may be red, swollen or tender and bleed easily during brushing and flossing. More severe cases of gingivitis and early signs of periodontitis include:

  • gums pulling away from teeth
  • chronic bad breath
  • pus draining from the gums
  • loose teeth or widening space between gums and teeth

The most common symptom of gingivitis is darker red gums that bleed during brushing. Healthy gums are pink, fit snugly around teeth and do not bleed easily. After the age of 30, the progression of gingivitis to periodontitis is the leading cause of tooth loss, more so than cavities.
